Why would you enjoy this new opportunity?

The opportunity will align to one of our Core Software Engineering Product Lines. Our company makes it easy for employees to work anywhere, any time, on any device, without compromising security. But making things easy for our customers is extremely challenging for us, so we are looking for unique thinkers of varying backgrounds that want to take on such complex, highly technical, customer-impacting challenges. We, the UEM team, have a large customer base that spans across industry verticals including a majority of the Fortune 500 companies. That means that the work you do here has a broad, measurable impact on the businesses and communities that these customers represent.

We use a wide range of technologies such depending on the team. We have a large catalog of internal and external training content that you can leverage if you need to brush-up on something you know or to learn something new.

What is the primary need, technical challenge, or problem you will be responsible for?

Depending on your background, interest, and technical alignment to the various areas of VMware's technology stack, you could be working on teams including Cloud Services, Center, NSX, ESXi, Platform Services, Tanzu, End user computing, Dev Ops, and more! Our teams help to design and deliver new functionality, mainly targeted for virtualization and cloud workloads. The most important item to remember about a VMware returnship opportunity is that it is all about potential and learning. We want our candidates to be well rounded individuals with a solid core CS knowledge and driven to learn new things. You will have the ability to do good work for your team in areas that include: operating systems, full stack, UI, databases, systems software, distributed systems, cloud computing, and more. These teams are looking for interns that are comfortable and confident programming in two or more of the following coding languages: C, Java, C++, Python, Go, HTML, CSS, Angular JS.

Success in the Returnship Role: What are the performance goals during the 18 week returnship you will work towards completing?

Success in the role is defined by the ability to consistently create high quality code that addresses the business requirement and is well tested, performant and maintainable.

* You will develop a solid understanding of the platform and the functionality it supports in the context of the larger platform. This would be demonstrated by your ability to deliver features and fix bugs, proficiency in handling production escalations and being the established service owner for one or two key services

* You are actively participating in engineering design and development efforts, ensuring that the solution can be scaled horizontally using shared components for messaging, caching, logging, and monitoring.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you  be performing on a regular basis?

Most of your time will be spent writing high-quality code based on engineering team coding standards that include excellent test coverage using the teams preferred programming language. You can expect to be the owner and take accountability for the quality of your code. You will need to become very familiar with the market we operate in and the problems the product addresses. Understand the challenges and limitations of the existing system. Demonstrate the ability to contribute to engineering roadmap and design discussions considering both these. Day-to-day activities include:

• Designing and developing new features

• Unit testing

• Designing and implementing effective automation tests for our CI/CD pipeline • Addressing issues found in the CI pipeline or production

• Code reviews

What does the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

VMware people share deeply held values that inspire us to build a diverse culture, make a positive impact on our customers, communities and the world around us, and support the policies that guide how we treat one another.

When it comes to the team you will be on that comes after you start! During the first two weeks of employment, you will attend onboarding with other new hires, learn about your project/work, the programs, and VMware as a company.  During your returnship, you will partner with your manager and a team mentor that has direct experience in our project area to better help guide you toward success.
